Joellen, last year I did a 10 week intensive course through Oxford Uni online on Jane Austen. Our tutor was a renowned scholar and teacher in that field. I learnt so much about Austen and her life, the history of the world at the time, culture etc and how it all affected her writing. But, like you, it became obvious that you could put all that aside and see her impressive ability to understand and write about people. The Beatrix Potter quote is such a good one. A bit like the Bible verse that suggests you live a simple and quiet life. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this beautiful book. It’s one of my favourites.
Catherine- that sounds like such an amazing experience!!! Something I love about literature is that there is always something to get out of it no matter a person's life experience, lay man or scholar, so many fascinating things to explore and take away; and with each reread too! It truly is amazing how she was able to pen characters with so much understanding. It inspired me to really just want to take in everyone around me and appreciate them more. Oh- I love that Bible verse! What a great connection! I'm so happy we could connect over this book <3
It was quite an experience and I am so glad that I did it, and really stretched myself in the process. I had not studied at the university level in 28 years so I was nervous but the participants were from all over the world and we all shared a love of books and Austen. You are right in the way you describe literature and what we can take from it, and a re read too! Yes also to the book kindred spirit connection.
